Meet Our Directors


Rhett Cox

“One More Time”

The Director of Bands at Timber Creek High School in Orlando, Florida, a position he has held since the school opened in 2001. During his tenure, the Band Program at Timber Creek has more than tripled in enrollment and its many ensembles have earned numerous regional and national accolades. The Timber Creek High School marching band, The Regiment, has earned four state championships and has been a Finalist at Bands of America Regionals in Indianapolis, Atlanta and Florida.

Under Rhett’s direction, the Timber Creek Wind Ensemble has consistently earned Superior ratings at District and State Music Performance Assessments and has been featured at the FMEA State Conference in Tampa, Florida (2009, 2018) and the CBDNA/NBA Southern Division Conference in Charleston, South Carolina (2016). Additionally, the Wind Ensemble has performed in New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., Atlanta and Dallas.

In March 2022, Rhett was honored with the opportunity to conduct The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in a joint concert performance with Timber Creek in Washington D.C.

Rhett is a past recipient of the “Teacher of the Year” award at Timber Creek and has twice received the Certificate of Merit for Marching Excellence from the National Band Association.

Rhett is a native of Chicago, Illinois and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education from Western Illinois University in 1994. Prior to his position at Timber Creek, Rhett was the Associate Director of Bands/Director of Percussion Studies at University High School (Florida) from 1998 – 2001 and Assistant Director of Bands at Rochelle Township High School (Illinois) from 1994 – 1997.

Devin Hoey

“Brass, Need I say more?

Devin Hoey is a dynamic music educator with twenty years of experience in developing acclaimed instrumental, band and general music programs. He has a passion for teaching, helping young people grow as musicians and a firm commitment to providing a nurturing environment. Mr. Hoey is dedicated to positive, focused and energized rehearsals that motivate students to perform at personal-best levels and discover a lifelong appreciation for music.

Currently, Mr. Hoey proudly serves as a band director at Timber Creek High School in Orlando Florida. Mr. Hoey’s primary teaching roles include the Symphonic Band, Jazz Bands, and organization of two winter guard performance ensembles.   Prior to Timber Creek, Mr. Hoey served as the Director of Orchestral Studies and Associate Band Director at Ocoee High School during the school’s inaugural year. Mr. Hoey is also an active performer with the Walt Disney Company’s Main Street Philharmonic at the Magic Kingdom.  In addition to musical endeavors, Mr. Hoey and his lovely wife Katie are blessed with two children, Claire and Graham.

Katie Hoey

“HIGH SCHOOL IS WAY MORE FUN.”

Katie Hoey is currently the Associate Director of Bands at Timber Creek High School in Orlando, Florida. Her teaching at Timber Creek focuses on the Freshman Band, development of individual student achievement curriculum, and middle school feeder school collaboration. Prior to this post, Katie served as Director of Bands at Avalon Middle School for 12 busy years where she was selected as Teacher of the Year in 2015 and worked with over 400+ band students each year.  Katie is a proud University of Central Florida alumnus, earning both her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Master’s degree in Music Education.  As an oboist, she is an active clinician and performer, while also maintaining a private studio of middle and high school students from throughout the Orlando area. Katie has presented clinics at the Florida Music Education Association conference and various professional development workshops throughout the state. As a cancer survivor, Katie is an advocate for cancer information and prevention, and cherishes her free time with family. Katie is married to C. Devin Hoey, who is also a high school band director and professional musician.  When she’s not teaching, she enjoys her job as mom to her two children, Claire and Graham.

Jonathan Tirado

“Drummers make more noise.”

Jonathan Tirado serves as the Associate Director of Bands at Timber Creek High School. His primary teaching roles include Percussion program director, percussion ensemble, and jazz band director.

He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida where he studied percussion under the direction of Jeff Moore and Kirk Gay. Born and raised in Orlando, Fl. Jonathan has been well versed in the marching, orchestral, concert, and jazz idioms since the age of seven. During his undergraduate studies, Jonathan marched four years within Drum Corps International. He performed under The Magic, Carolina Crown and The Cadets. He also performed for three seasons in Winter Guard International with Timber Creek Independent and Infinity Percussion.

As a teacher, Jon has worked with the William R. Boone High School, headed the percussion program at Timber Creek High School and was the Front Ensemble Arranger/Technician for Infinity Percussion. His primary instructors have included: Marty Morell, Tom Aungst, Colin McNutt, Bret Kuhn, Tim Fairbanks, Rhett Cox and Devin Hoey. Among his professional music career Jon has performed in the Disney Christmas Parade Toy Soldiers, Christ Church of Orlando and the Rhythm & Blue Drumline with the Orlando Magic.

He currently resides in Orland with his wife Estela and their son Gabriel.
